Pool & Spa Water Balance Calculations

Purpose

Water balance calculations are used to determine whether pool or spa water is balanced, scale-forming, or aggressive (corrosive). Proper balance protects swimmers, surfaces, plumbing, and mechanical equipment.

Parameters Required

The water balance index is calculated using simultaneous measurement of:

  • Water temperature
  • pH
  • Calcium hardness (ppm CaCO3)
  • Total alkalinity (ppm CaCO3)

Water Balance Formula

Index Value = pH + TF + CF + AF - 12.1

Definitions:

  • pH = measured pH level
  • TF = Temperature Factor
  • CF = Calcium Hardness Factor
  • AF = Total Alkalinity Factor
  • 12.1 = Constant

Index Value Interpretation

Index > +0.5

  • Scale-forming water
  • Cloudy water
  • Calcium scale on pool walls, floors, piping, heaters, and filters

Index < -0.5

  • Aggressive (corrosive) water
  • Eye and mucous membrane irritation
  • Corrosion of pumps, heaters, seals, and plumbing

Ideal Range

-0.5 to +0.5

Temperature Factor (TF) - Fahrenheit

Use this table when water temperature is measured in °F.

Select the temperature closest to the measured value.

Temperature Factor (TF) Calcium Hardness Total Alkalinity
Temperature (°F) TF ppm CaCO3 CF ppm CaCO3 AF
68 0.52 25 1.00 25 1.40
72 0.56 50 1.30 50 1.70
75 0.60 100 1.60 70 1.86
77 0.62 120 1.68 80 1.92
79 0.64 140 1.76 90 1.96
81 0.66 150 1.80 100 2.00
82 0.68 170 1.84 120 2.08
86 0.72 200 1.90 150 2.20
90 0.76 250 2.00 200 2.30
93 0.80 300 2.10 300 2.50
106 0.90 400 2.20 400 2.60

Calculation Example

Measured Values

  • pH: 7.5
  • Temperature: 26°C→ TF = 0.64
  • Calcium Hardness: 200 ppm → CF = 1.90
  • Total Alkalinity: 100 ppm → AF = 2.00

Calculation

Index= 7.5 + 0.64 + 1.90 + 2.00

Index= -0.06

Result: Balanced water (within ideal range)
